The Pregnancy Discrimination Act

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under the Act, pregnant women or women who are otherwise affected by pregnancy-related conditions have the right to the same treatment as other applicants or employees. For example, in hiring an employee, an employer cannot refuse to hire an applicant because she is pregnant.  If a pregnant woman is unable to perform the regular duties of her job, her employer is required to accommodate her just as it accommodates other temporarily disabled employees, whether it is by modifying her duties or by allowing her to take a certain amount of unpaid time off. If you would like to learn more about rights granted to pregnant women under the act, contact the firm to schedule a confidential consultation.
